Compactor Safety Checklist

The following is a SAFETY CHECKLIST for the purpose of keeping the Baler in a Safe Operating Condition.

A. Check that all signs and warnings are in place and in good condition: _____

B. Security Door at Chute: _____

C. All access pannels must have a warning sign: _____

D. All electrical devices such as contol cabinet, motor, etc., where voltage exceeds 120V must have warning:
_____ Near any opening where a person can enter or reach into
_____ Inside an area such as a hopper or chute
_____ At all security doors
_____ At all openings for feeding material

E. Check the following control functions for proper operation:
_____ On/Off Keyswitch
_____ Man/Auto Selector Switch
_____ For/Rev. Pushbutton Selector Switch
_____ Stop Button
_____ Other
_____ Full Light

F. Overall Safety Requirements and Physical Appearance

  • "CAUTION - DO NOT REMOVE ACCESS COVER EXCEPT FOR SERVICING.
  • TURN CONTROL PANEL KEYSWITCH TO 'OFF' POSITION & REMOVE KEY"
  • "DANGER - HIGH VOLTAGE"
  • "CAUTION - KEEP OUT"
  • "DANGER - DO NOT ENTER"
  • "CAUTION - CLOSE SECURITY DOOR"
  • "CAUTION - DO NOT OPERATRE COMPACTOR WHILE FEEDING"

G. If compactor has a chute, the feeding opening must have a security door interlocked to stop operation of the compactor when the security door is open.

H. Mainline disconnect switch must be located so that it can be seen from the compaction end of the compactor. Direct feeding compactor where the loading height is less that 42 inchest must have:

  • Deadman controls, with the control panel located in such a way that the operator cannot reach the loading zone pinchpoint area.
  • The installation of a point-of-operation guard that shall: prevent entry of hands, fingers, or any part of the body into the point of operationl; in itself, creat no pinch point between the guard and moving stationary compactor parts; offer maximum visibility of the point of operation consistent with other requirments; be interlocked in such a manner that the stationary compactor cannot be operated if the point of operation guard is removed; and be easily accessible for inspection and maintance.

Direct feed compactors having automatic cycling, must have an access cover to close off the opening, interlocked so that when the cover starts to open, the automatic cycling mode will not function.
